April is Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Awareness Month. STI infection is a growing problem across the country and Clayton County is no exception.
According to the CDC:
- There are at least 19 million new cases of STIs every year in the United States.
- In 2009, there were more than 1.5 million total cases of chlamydia and gonorrhea reported to the CDC - making them the two most commonly reported STIs in the United States.
- Direct annual medical costs associated with STIs in the United States are estimated at $17 billion.
STIs affect teens, adults, and senior adults from every race, culture, and economic background. Anyone who is sexually active, whether they are single or in a committed relationship, are at risk of getting an STI. While certain population segments have greater risk factors, anyone can get an STI at any time.
