Clayton County has one of the highest infant mortality rates among metro counties. Babies are born too soon or too small, meaning they are less likely to make it to their first birthday. To address this critical issue, Clayton County Health District has implemented several initiatives to help our community improve birth outcomes and create healthier families.
These initiatives include pregnancy and parenthood programs such as Healthier Generations, 24/7 Dad, the Perinatal and Infant Health Coalition, Safe Kids and PAT (Parents as Teachers).
Healthier Generations
Clayton County’s Healthier Generations program is dedicated to strengthening families by helping them get access to medical, social and educational services, among others. We provide education, home visits, case management, and referrals to other support services for women who are pregnant or have recently had a baby. Our mission is to improve the health and well-being of women, their babies, families and the community.

We hope to support healthy relationships between parents and improve men’s health, which includes addressing mental health issues and concerns. The program also helps strengthen life skills like job readiness that will help promote the self-sufficiency and economic stability of the family.

Community Action Network (CAN)
Founded in 2011 as the Perinatal and Infant Health Coalition, the Clayton County Community Action Network (CAN) is a partnership of public health officials, health care professionals, care management organizations (CMOs), nonprofits, and faith-based organizations dedicated to improving the birth outcomes of Clayton County’s children. This diverse group of professionals meets on a regular basis to identify strategies, share resources, and develop solutions in order to decrease the number of fetal and infant deaths in our community.
The coalition was established as a way for the county to strategically address these adverse birth outcomes. Issues addressed by the coalition include increasing access to services for women of child-bearing age; improving infant health; decreasing perinatal disparities; and addressing the social determinants of health.
